The aim of the sketch is to show the deep relation between the Weltnaschauung options in Maria (Mary, 1825) by Antoni Malczewski and the theological, philosophical and historiosophical reflection, which is a direct reaction to the last Partition of Poland. It also attempts to prove that - beside the Third Part of Dziady (Forefathers' Eve) - these options certify to continuity in realizing this subject matter between the period following the Partitions and early Romanticism. The author interprets the considerations relating to theodycea by making reference to The Book of Job and Ecclesiastes (The Book of Koheleth). Generalizing the attitudes of the biblical personages, he describes the attitudes of Polish writers and thinkers towards the tragedy of Poland's fall. In this context, the author differentiates motifs pertaining to the Weltanschauung as present in Malczewski's poem. They compose the purport of the work which goes along with the tradition of thought of theodycea up till modern theology.
