In the last few decades, tourism in Friuli Venezia Giulia has come to be widely recognised as a potential and powerful engine for new development, especially in rural, hilly and mountainous areas, leading in turn to opportunities for economic growth and increased employment. In particular, the successful combination of Natural Landscape, Art, Wine and Gastronomy, in their complementarity, plays a key role in tourism destination competitiveness. The purpose of this paper is to detect the presence of NL-A-WG elements in a territory (at municipal level), and analyse their effects on performance in the Tourism accommodation sector, which is measured in terms of the number of local accommodation facilities and their proximity (Boschma, 2005) in a spatial analysis. An empirical study has been conducted and a Touristic proximity index has been developed, with a final mapping of the results using GIS technology.
