This paper deals with the relationship between verbs and their arguments, investigating the so called “locative alternation” in Czech in the light of the “Construction Grammar”. On this basis the two alterning constructions, the “causative movement construction” and the “resultative” one, are seen to be linked by a metaphorical relation, the “resultative construction” being a metaphorical extension of the “causative movement” one. On the basis of their lexical meaning, the author defines four classes of verbs, which allow the locative alternation in Czech. A particular attention is devoted to the role of verbal prefixes in allowing or disallowing the verbs to appear in both constructions, which form the locative alternation: while prefix na- is claimed to allow the verbs to appear in both constructions, the “causative movement construction” and the “resultative” one, the prefix po- is claimed to allow the verbs to appear just in the “resultative construction”.
