The goal of this contribution is to critically analyse and discuss the published maturity models in scientific literature and management-oriented models offered from specialized consulting companies over the last three decades. In detail, 18 maturity models published from authors with an academic or scientific background and 14 maturity models offered from consulting firms were examined. In this research the following main issues that contribute to maturity in PSM were detected: purchasing controlling and performance management, a differentiated supplier (relationship) management, ICT (information and communication technology) support for routine tasks and for decision support, cross functional trained and skilled employees, clear interfaces and communication structures within a company and with the most important suppliers as well as a long-term strategic and goal orientation in purchasing and supply management (PSM). Based on these preliminary findings and a clear plan for further examination, a framework of an ongoing research project will be presented, with the goal to establish an original purchasing maturity framework that can be adapted according to a firm’s characteristics and contextual aspects.
