On 12 December 2011, two fishermen from Marano Lagunare (Udine) recovered an oblong concretion from the bottom of the Adriatic Sea, near Martignano Island. After returning it to authorities, the concretion was opened by the restorer of the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio of Friuli Venezia Giulia: the opening revealed the presence inside of a medieval sword and its scabbard. The observation of its characteristics permitted a comparison to be made with different medieval sword typologies recognised by the English scholar E. Oakeshott, so dating the object between the last half of 10th and 12th instead.
