Abstract

The goal of this text is to analyze the usefulness of the open-block through some significant examples. Starting from the ideas of “open block” by C. de Portzamparc, it is possible to understand the need to create new collective and public places between the existing urban fabric in order to improve the possibilities of social aggregation. Trough redefining the perimeters of the urban volumes and trough hybrid spaces that break through the cordons of the perimetric architecture, we would proceed towards the development of in-between spaces, which restore continuity with the city. In order to create new social places in the existing local fabric, we should focus on the urban redevelopment that redefines the perimeters of the buildings. That it is possible by “reopening the courts” and by developing fluid and continuous areas that prolong the urban fabric and reconnect it to a ground/under- ground circulation system, without interruptions.
