This paper is devoted to the discussion of practical applications of a recent paradox in curved beams, according to which it is possible to simultaneously remove material and reduce the bending stresses. This paradox is compared to a similar paradox valid for rectilinear beams. The beam cross section zones from which material may advantageously be removed are clarified with the aid of Gateaux differentiation. A simplification that eases the application of the weight optimization procedure is commented with reference to crane hooks. Possible extensions to the optimization of small and big ends of a connecting rod are discussed.

Abstract

This paper is devoted to the discussion of practical applications of a recent paradox in curved beams, according to which it is possible to simultaneously remove material and reduce the bending stresses. This paradox is compared to a similar paradox valid for rectilinear beams. The beam cross section zones from which material may advantageously be removed are clarified with the aid of Gateaux differentiation. A simplification that eases the application of the weight optimization procedure is commented with reference to crane hooks. Possible extensions to the optimization of small and big ends of a connecting rod are discussed.
