Abstract

The architecture and frescoes executed by Giusto de' Menabuoi between 1375 and 1378 in Padua Cathedral Baptistery have their own complex history of execution and transformation which determines the need for conservation and vulnerability assessment. The D.P.C.M. 2011, the Italian regulation on the evaluation and reduction of the cultural heritage seismic risk, introduced the procedure for calculating the artistic heritage seismic safety. The Path of Knowledge described by the Standard provides for architectural and artistic surfaces reading useful guidance for identifying the material consistency, the state of conservation and the degree of transformation. It also provides of a model capable of approximating with sufficient accuracy, the historical complexity and establishes, moreover, the need for a possible intervention to increase the resilience of the support-painted surface system. In the survey and interpretation phase, the study of the executive technique of the wall paintings, the specialist examination of their state of conservation and the structural quality of the support play a fundamental role that identifies a peculiar and innovative field of multidisciplinary research involving engineers, architects, archaeologists, art historians and art conservators. For these reasons, this study describes, starting from the case study, a methodology for approaching the complex problem of artistic heritage seismic safety, a topic still under development on the international scene.
