«Tabulae» per sintesi o per sbaglio: due casi nella tradizione del «Rescriptum» di Gregorio Magno

Two «tabulae» stand out as prime examples in the tradition of the «Rescriptum Gregorii». In the redactional form «Duodecim capitula», the opening «tabula» recalls the «rubricae» inside the text: each item is the summary of the incipit of the «interrogationes» that Augustine of Canterbury addresses to Pope Gregory. The origin of the «tabula» in the redaction «Capitula condensata» is certainly different and it depends on the misunderstanding of the copyists: the indications in the ancestor (probably written on an added folio) are misinterpreted and corrections and integrations for the beginning of each «interrogatio» are put together in a sort of «tabula capitulorum» that introduces the whole text. The clumsy «tabula» survives in only two manuscripts and doesn’t succeed in other redactions of the «Rescriptum».
