Pertinence et vulgarisation scientifique : jouer Sperber contre Sperber

Résumé – Cet article a deux objectifs : dans un premier temps, décrire des postures traductives, à partir d’une double étude de cas ; ensuite, en prescrire une, cohérente avec une théorie spécifique. Pour ce faire, nous analyserons deux traductions, en français et en italien, d’un livre de Dan Sperber (Explaining Culture, 1996), en montrant qu’une au moins d’entre elles ne semble pas prendre en compte le modèle de la communication établi par le même Sperber, avec Deirdre Wilson, dans leur théorie de la pertinence (1986). Nous verrons enfin que cette théorie semble spécialement adaptée à la traduction de la vulgarisation scientifique. Il est donc possible de « jouer Sperber contre Sperber », en faisant une critique de la traduction qui prenne en compte sa vision de la communication. Abstract – The aim of this article is twofold. First, describing some translation strategies; then, prescribing one of them, consistent with a specific theory. To do this, we will first analyze two translations, in French and Italian, of a single book by Dan Sperber (Explaining Culture, 1996), showing that at least one of them does not seem to take into account the model of communication established by the same author, together with Deirdre Wilson, in their relevance theory (1986). We will then see that this theory seems particularly useful when it comes to translating popular science. It is therefore possible to “play Sperber against Sperber”, making a translation critique that takes into account his vision of language and communication.
