The theory of affordance, refers to the ability of living beings to perceive features from the environment that contribute to their survival (Gibson, 1979). In the perspective given by Donald Norman, this definition has evolved to include natural affordances (of phylogenetic origin) as opposed to intentional affordances (of ontogenetic origin). Given the growing interest in the iconic value of languages, including sign languages, the role of affordance in the meaning process will be explored, with practical examples drawn from research conducted on corpora of signs from Italian and foreign sign language dictionaries.

Abstract
The theory of affordance, refers to the ability of living beings to perceive features from the environment that contribute to their survival (Gibson, 1979). In the perspective given by Donald Norman, this definition has evolved to include natural affordances (of phylogenetic origin) as opposed to intentional affordances (of ontogenetic origin). Given the growing interest in the iconic value of languages, including sign languages, the role of affordance in the meaning process will be explored, with practical examples drawn from research conducted on corpora of signs from Italian and foreign sign language dictionaries.File in questo prodotto:
