Philanthropy in Europe. Italy

As highlighted in previous efforts to map philanthropy in Italy, there is no official national survey or dataset to accurately measure the overall flaw of donations. Therefore, a precise estimate of total giving is not possible due to a lack of information on the sources or the use of donations. Bearing in mind that the data available will lead to an underestimation of the state of philanthropy in Italy. Despite their limitations, the available data show the primary role of individual giving, which accounts for 83% of philanthropic efforts in Italy. The data also suggest that foundations of banking origin play an important role in the context. Education and research, public/social benefit and culture are the sectors that attracted the most donations. This confirms that philanthropy is an "investment in society" with a medium- to long-term focus, designed to have a positive impact on territories and people.
