Italian grammaticography has a long and rich tradition, which can be traced back to humanism. Between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, Italian grammar was intertwined with the long-standing questione della lingua and was predominantly normative. After World War II, research in this area underwent a profound renewal, due to the development of the general Italian linguistic situation and the opening up of scholars towards twentieth-century linguistics. In the present era, grammaticography is divided into two distinct methodological approaches: grammars that draw inspiration from contemporary linguistics and grammars that adopt the method of analysis developed between the Renaissance and the mid twentieth century. The former are known as modern grammars, while the latter are referred to as traditional grammars.
