This systematic literature review examines how the Humanization of Care (HOC) has developed as a strategic response to the efficiency-driven reforms introduced by New Public Management since the 1980s, which improved healthcare performance but weakened the practitioner–patient relationship. After 25 years of research and adoption, and following the surge of interest triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for a comprehensive synthesis has become evident. The motivation for this study stems from the fragmented nature of the existing literature, which often overlooks the interconnections between the relational, organizational, and structural dimensions of HOC. By analysing 151 studies through a bibliometric approach, this review aims to identify the core thematic clusters characterizing the field and to provide a theory-based research agenda to guide future research and support healthcare professionals in adopting more humanized care practices.

Abstract
This systematic literature review examines how the Humanization of Care (HOC) has developed as a strategic response to the efficiency-driven reforms introduced by New Public Management since the 1980s, which improved healthcare performance but weakened the practitioner–patient relationship. After 25 years of research and adoption, and following the surge of interest triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for a comprehensive synthesis has become evident. The motivation for this study stems from the fragmented nature of the existing literature, which often overlooks the interconnections between the relational, organizational, and structural dimensions of HOC. By analysing 151 studies through a bibliometric approach, this review aims to identify the core thematic clusters characterizing the field and to provide a theory-based research agenda to guide future research and support healthcare professionals in adopting more humanized care practices.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
