Abstract

Fruit growth and development is the result of several processes acting in a coordinated manner. The problem of assigning a specific function to physiological and molecular factors contributing to fruit development is aggravated by the presence of tissues with different functions, dynamics of growth, and carbohydrate accumulation. However, some controlling mechanisms have been demonstrated to play a key role, such as the genetic determination of the floral whorls, and the change in hormonal homeostasis.
