Abstract

The “ Udine Notations” collect different materials own of narratives, techniques, sensitivity, languages and different times: from photographic reproductions of significant details of architectural models, on the issues proposed in the laboratories of elements of architectural composition of the first year of study - here mainly chosen under the theme “pavilions and fences/ patio and pavilion” explicit homage to Peter and Allison Smithson and their invocation “This is Tomorrow” at the historic exhibition in London in 1956 - to researches on the territories and the city-landscape developed with fifth-year students, graduate students and colleagues involved in the research unit of the University of Udine operating in the national networks of PRIN, ending with notes and programs related to individual issues and voices. Notes, drafts, images, projects fragments, notations that do not conceal a will, or a duty, to make mirror, ambivalent, the relation between teaching, experimental design, and research. Research through Design to better understand the multiple narratives of objects and the complex and possible reactions of those we would name, in analogy with neurons, “architectures-mirror”: to propose the re-reading of the masters of the Modern able to anticipate both the cyclical evolution of the Baroque catastrophes of the architectural space, as prefiguring its complex reconstructions in the city- landscape through procedural notations absolutely unique in their transversal nature and multiplicity of languages simultaneously translated, diagrams capable of transforming mundane sea-scapes in a deep analysis of the body, perception, phenomenology of vision inscribed in the see-scapes; to capture in the “quadratura” rather than a painting technique, a way of thinking, an attitude, a costume or an andamento to detect the potentials in a “ordinary space”, from the nave of a church to the model of the contemporary city par excellence - Venice - in its frame lagoon and described by the scurofondo of centuriations at its origin. Research through design as a technique or tactic to draw maps and atlases of the territories and landscapes that were “theatres of war”, dramatic scenes of destructive rhetoric of the various “theatre weapons “, strongholds of imaginary boundaries and, in their absence, remain as networks, superfluous, without programs and strategies, uncertain between culture and nature, but ideal object of a looming recycling or, rather, of a policy of “up- cycling”, the last hypothesis that the research program of national interest approved in 2012, able to replace the new role for them on the plane-palimpsest of contemporary city- landscape. Udine Notations - Research through Design as notes of studies and projects-tests continuously verified by the speed of thought of the dialogue with the students and assistants, as memory of the seminal and resistant passion of some colleagues, to all of them the heartfelt thanks; as traces for a research to be carried out simultaneously, without translation: materials, in fact.
