Multi-project management contexts require the identification of proper ways to transfer knowledge among different simultaneous projects over time, thus allowing the exploitation of information needed to identify design solutions able to provide better answers to the trade-off between functional requirements and available resources. This paper aims to investigate how formalized methodologies can effectively support the implementation of knowledge collection and transfer practices in a multi-project setting. We propose a knowledge integration and transfer model grounded on the Value Analysis methodology, empirically developed and validated through an action research in the shipbuilding industry. The model has been translated into a software application, implemented in the partner firm. We demonstrate that the proposed model can support decision making using shared evaluation criteria, facilitate reuse of the available knowledge base, increase interactions between people and reduce decision time.
