In this paper some applications of the so-called new comparative method are presented. A synchronic comparison among languages aims at highlighting aspects of the universal grammar. The argument is that this method is particularly suitable for the teaching of Latin in universities, for his ability to be scientific and overcome some inadequacies of traditional grammar. In particular, the concepts of phoneme, morphological stem and phrase structure in Latin, English and Italian are explored in this updated perspective.
