The paper describes the use of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) to control the resurfacing of Piazza Matteotti of Udine, an area of almost 2,000 square meters, covered by about 12,000 stone slabs, half of which were restored in early 2012. The floor has been surveyed before (April 2010) and after (April 2012) this remake, with a Riegl Z390i TLS integrated with a Nikon D200 camera. Among the various processing performed, fundamentals are the scans registration, on target and with ICP method, and the construction of the respective DSM. Finally, to compare the two surveys, DSM 2012 has been registered onto DSM 2010. Ex ante TLS survey confirmed the need of the restoration, locating and quantifying failure (even few centimeters) and hazardous gaps. Thanks to the ex post TLS survey, it was possible to check the consistency of the restoration with the design and the significant improvement in the regularity elevation of the new floor surface.
