The paper presents the results of a study focused on the case of Common Properties Institution (CPIs) in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The research approach was based on the concept of local empowerment: the self-government of resources and the self-definition of the rules of their use and appropriation are seen as a real opportunity for local communities. The analysis of the strategies adopted by CPIs to manage their common pool resources may contribute to the debate on local development and promote new models of rural governance.
