„Menschen zur Menschlichkeit aufzurufen“. Stefan Zweigs Humanismus-Konstellationen

In his memoir The World of Yesterday Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) presents himself not only as an Austrian, a Jew and a writer, but also as a European, a pacifist and a humanist. Zweig’s well-established (self-)portrayal as an advocate of a united Europe under the banner of a pacifist humanism can be followed in his biographical path as well as in his literary works. The research project aims to explore the topic of humanism in Zweig’s literary production, in the attempt of understanding what literary and extra-literary sources and references underlie this conception and how these were adopted and revisited by the author in his project of the ‘humanization of the world’. The study draws on works from different literary genres (biographical, narrative, nonfiction) and creative periods in order to show on the one hand the all-encompassing scope of the author’s humanist commitment in all its possible ramifications, on the hand the constant evolution of such commitment over time, resulting in a never-ending process of negotiation.

Nella sua opera memoriale Il mondo di ieri Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) si presenta non soltanto come austriaco, ebreo e scrittore, ma anche come europeo, pacifista e umanista. L’ormai consolidata (auto)rappresentazione di Zweig come sostenitore di un’Europa unita sotto il segno di un umanesimo pacifista si manifesta tanto nel suo cammino esistenziale, quanto nel suo percorso artistico. Nel presente progetto di tesi ci si occuperà di indagare la tematica dell’umanesimo nella produzione letteraria di Zweig, con l’obiettivo di comprendere quali fonti o influenze letterarie ed extra-letterarie siano alla base di questa concezione e come queste siano state recepite e rielaborate dall’autore nel suo progetto di ‘umanizzazione del mondo’. Nell’indagine verranno considerate opere biografiche, narrative e saggistiche di diverse fasi creative, per mettere in luce come il confronto di Zweig con l’umanesimo si configuri come un vero e proprio percorso, un processo di continua negoziazione, di costante ricerca e ricalibrazione.
