The Cancionero de Baena was compiled around 1425-1430 by Juan Alfonso de Baena, royal secretary of Juan II of Castile, and is preserved in a later manuscript copy, quite deturped, in the National Library of Paris. The Cnacionero gathers "the poetic production of the reigns of the first Castilian Trastamara; that is, Enrique II (1369-1379), Juan I (1379-1390), Enrique III (1390-1406) and, at least, the first decades of Juan II (1406-1454), with particular relevance for the older poets, considered more representative of an aesthetic previous to the moment of its compilation" (p.10). From 1851, the date of its first edition, the Cancionero has been republished several times, but without clarifying many of its obscure points, which, on the contrary, the colective work edited by Antonio Chas Aguion helps to elucidate.
