This research examines the role played by the covers illustrated by Walter Molino for “La Domenica del Corriere” in shaping the social imaginaries of post-war Italy. Through an interdisciplinary approach that brings together periodical studies, visual studies, and media history, the study analyses the cover not as an autonomous image but as an imagetext: a composite artefact in which the peritext – understood in Genette’s sense – works in tandem with the illustration to guide interpretation and construct meaning. The study is articulated along three complementary axes: a biographical and professional reconstruction of Walter Molino; a historical and editorial contextualisation of “La Domenica del Corriere” between reconstruction, centrism, and the “economic miracle”; and a thematic analysis of the covers organised into nine clusters (war, politics, the United States, science and technology, women, religion, sport, entertainment, crime and current events). Each cover is examined in relation to its accompanying texts – captions and internal articles – in order to highlight the specific narrative orchestration through which the weekly structured the reading of the image. Whenever possible, the illustrations have been related to the artist’s ‘Schedario di lavoro’, a personal subject index that helps reconstruct the process of image production. A systematic comparison with “Vie Nuove”, a weekly positioned at the opposite end of the political spectrum, further brings to light divergent narrative postures and different symbolic constructions of contemporaneity. Taken as a whole, the research offers an articulated portrait of Italian visual culture in the post-war period, showing how Molino’s covers – arising from the interplay between individual creativity, editorial practices, and media infrastructures – contributed decisively to shaping the social imaginaries of republican Italy.
