This chapter will examine the reporting of the European war news in two rival eighteenth-century American periodicals, the Philadelphia General Advertiser, better known as the Aurora, and the Gazette of the United States. The investigation will focus on news reports published in these two periodicals in the month of June 1796, which is when the news about «the renewal of hostilities» (Gazette, 10 June 1796) between the French Republic on the one hand and the Austrian empire and its allies on the other finally made its way across the Atlantic.
