This paper aims to present a, still, very rough framework of the decorative types of the amphoras’ inscribed lids found during the excavations for the construction of the modern sewer-system of Aquileia. The intent is to identify comparisons and possible meanings of certain symbols or graphic decorations that appear to have a particular importance. Despite the fact that the results are still preliminary, it is important to highlight the great number of variations, complexity and variety of themes, which induce to reflect on the significance of this class of materials, until now poorly studied.

Abstract

This paper aims to present a, still, very rough framework of the decorative types of the amphoras’ inscribed lids found during the excavations for the construction of the modern sewer-system of Aquileia. The intent is to identify comparisons and possible meanings of certain symbols or graphic decorations that appear to have a particular importance. Despite the fact that the results are still preliminary, it is important to highlight the great number of variations, complexity and variety of themes, which induce to reflect on the significance of this class of materials, until now poorly studied.
