This paper examines the testimonies of the first phase of reception of Virgil's work in the late Augustan and Tiberian age. Expecially the world of Rethorical schools hosts a lively discussion on both Vergilian text and style, where the poet's obtrectatores and defensores are faced and men of lettres, poets, masters of rhetorics, critics, and men of power take part in the discussion. New proposals are presented about plena deo, a famous ghostly quotation by Virgil, which for decades enjoyed great success with declamators.
