Vat. Barb. gr. 214 is a thin codex containing scholia to Theocritus and the carmina figurata Wings and Ax. It was commissioned (in 1484), owned and corrected by the Venetian humanist Ermolao Barbaro and passed later to the young Vettor Fausto (Falconio) and then to Parrasio. The paper shows that the text of the two poems, restyled by Barbaro, presents also a number of interesting (apparently conjectural) corrections by the hand of the philologist Marcus Musurus. Furthermore this revised text was exploited for his roman edition of 1516 by Zacharias Callierges, who appears to have loaned this same codex from Parrasio, who came to Rome in 1515. The ms. played therefore a role as an actual « vehicle » of Musurus’ contribution to the edition of Theocritus. A contribution that, concerning also the twin edition Giuntina of the same year, represents one of the most debated questions of the theocritean transmission.

Abstract

Vat. Barb.
