Starting from a reconstruction of the late nineteenth-century literary and cultural environment to which Arrigo Boito belonged, this paper seeks to identify the medical and psychological sources of the short story Il pugno chiuso (1870). The aim is to map out the way in which scientific texts contribute to the complex narrative structure of the story according to the poetics of realism that Boito developed since his well-known Polemica letteraria (1864).
