Abstract

Between the early sixth and late fifth centuries BCE, Corinthian and Athenian vase painters depicted on their vessels some male individuals (to a much lesser extent feminine) indulging in trivial actions during symposium and komos. The scenes are discussed as images of ritual behavior, induced by Dionysian drunkenness and according to Anacreon anhybrìstos (licit). It is emphasized that they are among the earliest manifestations of the comic spirit in the Greek pictorial tradition.
