The purpose of the article is to explain how the Commentarium in Hiezechielem of Hrabanus Maurus was created through the analysis of the autograph manuscripts Wolfenbüttel, Herzog-August Bibliothek, Weiss. 92 and 84. The codices were written in Fulda by fifteen different scribes over the years recognised as those of the work’s composition. The analysis of the handwritings, of the quires and of the sources of the commentarium led to the discovery of the fluid way in which the text was created. In fact, the conception of the work was not linear, but carried out through various simultaneous operations, such as the main draft, divided between groups of copysts, the emendation, the integration of new sources, the division into chapters and books. Different scribes had different roles in creating the text, some more important than others. One of them was responsible for the main conception of the commentarium and for coordinating other copysts, who had to make some decisions during the creative process as well. Hrabanus Maurus, whose handwriting can probably be identified among those in the manuscript, made few minor emendations throughout the text, and focused his interest on the more original parts of the work, the dedication letter used as prologue and the index.
