Since its inception, artificial intelligence (AI) developed along two significantly different directions: symbolic AI and sub-symbolic AI. The former focuses on knowledge representation and automated reasoning methods and techniques, while the latter relies on machine/deep learning, neural networks, and genetic algorithms. In this paper, we give an account of the main characteristics and issues of the two areas of AI and explore their relationships. On the basis of such an analysis, we then discuss the issue of creativity in AI.

Abstract

Since its inception, artificial intelligence (AI) developed along two significantly different directions: symbolic AI and sub-symbolic AI. The former focuses on knowledge representation and automated reasoning methods and techniques, while the latter relies on machine/deep learning, neural networks, and genetic algorithms. In this paper, we give an account of the main characteristics and issues of the two areas of AI and explore their relationships. On the basis of such an analysis, we then discuss the issue of creativity in AI.
