The aim of this paper is to present the main results of the debate on architectural restoration that took place in the context of the International Congresses of Architects organized between 1867 and 1937 and in the Congress on the Protection of Architectural Restoration and Monuments in 1889. It is an overview of the evolution of the international debate that preceded the congress of Athens in 1931. Particularly interesting is the final report of the Congress of Vienna in 1908, in which the positions now consolidated in the culture of restoration at the beginning of the twentieth century were exposed: the ancient monuments must be preserved without modifications, it is not correct to restore monuments to their original form, additions must be made in a contemporary style by connecting in relationships and contours to the shape of the monument.
