Lorenzo Valla in Naples: biographical notes · The rich collection at the Archivo de la Corona de Aragón in Barcelona preserves some chancery records (mostly letters and mandates) concerning Lorenzo Valla. In his capacity as secretary to King Alfonso of Aragon, Valla must have been directly involved in drawing up those documents. Many of those records are known to scholars who have studied this famous Roman humanist. However, they have never been analyzed in detail in their entirety. We are speaking of a dozen acts, which shed light on some specific circumstances and phases of Valla’s career in the service of the Aragonese king from early 1435 to the end of 1444. From then onwards his role at the Neapolitan court became less important, as he had already decided to move to the papal Curia in Rome – which he did in 1448.
