We show the Castelnuovo-de Franchis Theorem for local systems of relative one forms. Thanks to this result we prove a factorization theorem for semistable families up to base change and we find conditions ensuring that the factorizing variety is a product. As a byproduct, we give a characterization of maximal rationally connected fibrations in the relative setting.
