One-pull or two-pull press? Guidelines for a diagnosis. The transition from the one-pull to the two-pull press was a major technological improvement that took place between 1470s and 1480s in Renaissance printing houses. Since it had relevant consequences both on production procedures and on the treatment of the copy text, distinguishing the kind of press employed to print a specific edition may prove significant. The main source of evidence being the material evidence of the editions themselves, this article examines two main factors which can help with the diagnosis: the use of full or half-sheets in quarto editions and the pattern of impression and counter-impression. The research is based on a sample of editions, mainly Venetian, those listed in the Quaderneto, a 1480 list of incunabula for sale in the Padua bookshop of Antonio Moretto.

Abstract
One-pull or two-pull press? Guidelines for a diagnosis. The transition from the one-pull to the two-pull press was a major technological improvement that took place between 1470s and 1480s in Renaissance printing houses. Since it had relevant consequences both on production procedures and on the treatment of the copy text, distinguishing the kind of press employed to print a specific edition may prove significant. The main source of evidence being the material evidence of the editions themselves, this article examines two main factors which can help with the diagnosis: the use of full or half-sheets in quarto editions and the pattern of impression and counter-impression. The research is based on a sample of editions, mainly Venetian, those listed in the Quaderneto, a 1480 list of incunabula for sale in the Padua bookshop of Antonio Moretto.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
