Abstract

Three watercolours, held in the Royal Library of Windsor as part of Cassiano dal Pozzo’s collection, depict lost images of Pope Urban V. In 2002 I identified the original location of two of the images, whilst the third could only be established as coming from Arezzo, based on a hitherto overlooked text by the antiquarian Sebastiano Vannini, which describes the image precisely. Several questions concerning the Arezzo image are thus addressed in this article, including its original setting, possible patron, and the reasons for the transfer from Arezzo to Rome in the seventeenth century.
