Amplitude and frequency dependence of the resonance group velocity dispersion (GVD) in erbium doped fiber lasers (EDFL's) is derived from cold cavity loss measurements. The GVD obtained consists of a variable term and a cavity loss independent background term. Application to passively mode locked EDFL's for ultrashort pulse generation optimization is indicated.
