By a variation of the Thue-Siegel-Dyson method in Diophantine approximation, a new uniform (but ineffective) result in the approximation of algebraic numbers by rationals is proved. It contains and generalizes the estimates by Dyson and Gelfond. The new ideas come from the interpolation-determinant method introduced in transcendental number theory by Michel Laurent.
