Aetiology, pathology and clinical features of tuberous breast are reviewed. Based on histological and intraoperative aspects, the new term 'transareolar mastocele' is proposed. The Authors describe an original surgical technique that permits the maximal areolar reduction and the reconstruction of a retroareolar system of contention based on an inferior subareolar dermal flap.
