Taking its rise from the recently resumed polemic about the problem of naming the Renaissance literature in Dalmatia, the article brings some methodological thoughts on the latest development of comparative literature. It briefly argues the usefulness of deploying the term orientalism when referring to the Balkans. The article summarizes some historical stages of the Croatian-Italian polemic and offers possible ways of ending it in the following aspects: the study of relations of power in interpretative texts, the critic’s awareness of the performativity of his/her own discourse, and crossing the boundaries of disciplines with relation to anthropology and women’s studies.
