The novel, five-co-ordinate ruthenium(II) species [RuCl2(PPh3)(L2)] (L2 = S-biphemp) has been synthesized and characterized, as well as its S-binap analogue. The solution behaviour and reactivity of [RuCl2(PPh3)(L2)] toward carbon monoxide and molecular hydrogen is described. The acetato derivatives [RuCl(eta2-O2CCH3)(PPh3)(L2)] and [Ru(eta2-O2CCH3)2(L2)] were also prepared. The synthesis and reactivity of the tetrahydroborato adduct [RuH(eta2-BH4)(PPh3)(L2)] are described.
