Michele Barbi studied Italian literature at the University and the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa from 1885 to 1889 under Alessandro D'Ancona, one of the most influential scholars of Italian 'Scuola storica'. The article studies some aspects of their relationship, namely the context of its begiiming, Barbi's early works on Dante, Italian literature and folk poetry, with their further developments, the cooperation between Barbi and D'Ancona in teaching (1896-1898). It is noted that Barbi's interest in recent centuries starts early, at the same time as D'Ancona's; furthermore, Barbi's studies on Folk poetry are consistent to some extent with D'Ancona guidance. As regards the course of Italian literature in which they cooperated. Barbi proposed that it include some seminars in Textual criticism.
