In this article I grapple with the dearth of research into gender and English language education in Italy. My intention here is to re-affirm the relevance of critical inquiry into gender in language education. I attempt to accomplish this objective by 1) engaging with the (little) previous research in the field of foreign language education that has been carried out by English language specialists in Italy from gender perspective, 2) arguing for the relevance of gender perspective in the context of increasingly hostile, anti-feminist and anti-gender contemporary Italian society, and 3) discussing desiderata for advancing research in this field.
