Attentional processes are of central importance because of their significance for all other cognitive functions: memory, reasoning, etc. However, there are many conceptual and methodological problems about attention. The first question concerns the definition and the identification of specifical attentional subprocesses, through which information processing, decisional processing and behaviour are controlled and planned. With regard to person with mental retardation, several attentional processes appear seriously deficient when compared to individuals of the same chronological age. This study assessed the deficits of attention, using modified versions of the Stroop test. Persons with MR performed as well as MA-matched children.

Abstract
Attentional processes are of central importance because of their significance for all other cognitive functions: memory, reasoning, etc. However, there are many conceptual and methodological problems about attention. The first question concerns the definition and the identification of specifical attentional subprocesses, through which information processing, decisional processing and behaviour are controlled and planned. With regard to person with mental retardation, several attentional processes appear seriously deficient when compared to individuals of the same chronological age. This study assessed the deficits of attention, using modified versions of the Stroop test.
