Objectives This study is aimed to the analysis of the main legal and economic aspects of the fuel price drop policy in a North East region of Italy. Methods and Results A global overview about this subject can be given analysing the different aspects of this policy, considering also the chronological point of view. The first step in the analysis concerns the examination of national and local laws regulating the fuel price drop. The second step is related to the preliminary study of the phenomenon and the third one concerns the financial effects on the annual accounts of the regional administration. The dataset has been collected for the period 1997-2006 and it has been previously studied using the classical and modern approach to time series analysis. The last step is the description of the regional situation in 2009 before the changes in the fuel drop policy that occur in 2010. Conclusions The paper ends with an evaluation of the policy from consumers point of view. This local economic initiative can be considered as a good example of fiscal federalism.
